Through the bridges, with some interesting weather
Another enjoyable sail on Sunday with 4 Wayfarers heading upriver with the tide, tacking in lovely conditions up under both bridges before turning back for a stop at “Davey’s beach” (the beach next to Davey Anderson’s boatyard at Newport). Before landing we sat under an enormous (and un-forecast!) 10 minute downpour, but that cleared in time for a pleasant picnic.
With the sun now shining we headed back to the clubhouse on a gentle run; then, with 3 boats landed, we were hit by an unexpected force 5 blast which capsized one boat enjoying some last-minute tacking off the club slipway. With the strength of the wind and the tide they were eventually dragged through the lifeboat pier before beaching and being towed back by the safety boat. A rather dramatic, though injury-free, end to an enjoyable Sunday cruise…
